D. KEVIN MAYO, INC.  Certified General Accountant

What is a Certified General Accountant?

A Certified General Accountant (C.G.A.) is a professional accountant who has been granted the designation upon completion of a rigorous course of studies, exams, and work experience.  In the Province of B.C., CGA's and CA's (Chartered Accountants) have the same public practice rights.  In other words, both are professional accountants who by government law are allowed to perform the same accounting and tax services for both publically traded and private corporations, non-profit entities, and individuals.

What is the difference between a professional accountant and a non-designated accountant or bookkeeper?

A professional accountant has achieved their designation through work experience, studies and exams.  Also, they are required by their respective organization to maintain professional standards, are to abide by Rules of Conduct and Code of Ethics, and must maintain a high level of continuing professional development credits.  They are also required to maintain Professional Liability Insurance.  The respective organizations also have the means to investigate and displine members who fail to uphold their Rules of Conduct and Code of Ethics, or who betray the publics' trust.  Bookkeepers or non-designated accountants do not have a Rules of Conduct and Code of Ethics, do not have to continously maintain and upgrade their skills and knowledge, and nor do they have to have Professional Liability Insurance.  There is currently no government legislated, self-governing body that regulates and oversees the quality and standards of bookkeepers and non-designated accountants.

And who I am I?

Well, believe it or not, I knew I was going to be an accountant since the age of 15.  I have always had an interest in business, numbers and taxation.  However, the best part of my job is helping people, whether they are an individual taxpayer who requires assistance navigating the complexities of the Canadian tax system, or a business who requires the attention to detail to provide a timely and accurate set of financial statements for which they use to base their business and management decisions and to prepare and file their corporate income tax returns.  I do not see the role of an accountant as strictly a number cruncher, but also as a communicator and people helper.

Like most of the businesses in the greater Sooke community, I am a local business person, living, working and active in Sooke.   My two children attend school in Sooke.  Currently I am on the board of directors of the Sooke Harbour Chamber of Commerce (www.sookeharbourchamber.com), and have served as both an executive director and treasurer.  I have also served one the executive of the Sooke & District Minor Hockey Association (www.sookeharbour.com/smha/index.html), serving as a treasurer.  I have coached fastball as well as minor hockey for the past three years.  Also I have served as the treasurer of the Ecole Poirier PAC and Sooke Coopertaive Preschool.  I also strongly believe in supporting the businesses and organizations of Sooke and area.
